With ICT-enabled transformations emerging fast across industry ecosystems globally, the age-old question of when an industry gets disrupted has found a new answer. Dr Dhrupad Mathur (Associate Professor and Deputy Director – Faculty Management, SP Jain School of Global Management) shares his take in an article titled “Interstitial Incorporated: The Phenomena of Undefined, Undetected and Ubiquitous Business Disruption” in BW Businessworld, a leading Indian business publication.

“Today, an industry starts to get disrupted as soon as it gets completely defined, as soon as its structure, characteristics and boundaries are relatively well set, and as soon as it delineates itself from the other industry spaces that exhibit either some common generic behaviours or complementary functionalities. This disruption goes deep, undefined and undetected, and is eventually ubiquitous,” writes Dr Mathur.

In the article, Dr Mathur shares his insights on how interstitial entities are:

  • Shifting the balance of power in an industry
  • Realigning industry stakeholder interrelationships
  • Have abnormally high growth rates
  • Unlocking unusual business values streams
  • Unhindered by traditional competition
  • Emerging everywhere
  • Not adequately recognised in the business management literature
