Dr Shalini Chandra: Building Trust in Virtual Collaborations by Social Presence

In the article published in CXO Today, a premiere resource on the world of IT relevant to key business decision makers, Shalini Chandra (Professor of Information Technology, SP Jain School of Global Management) outlines the importance of social presence as a trust building mechanism for virtual world collaborations.

Shalini Chandra

She talks about how virtual interactions lack the physical indications present in face-to-face communication, making it challenging to establish trust. She further emphasises that social presence projects warmth, understanding, and attentiveness in online interactions and plays a crucial role in building trust among team members.

Dr Chandra writes, “However, with the transition from 2-D online web pages to 3-D VW web places, where virtual users can display facial expressions and emotions and interact with a sense of colocation, socialness present in VWs is the key to reducing uncertainties. Socialness closely corresponds to “social presence” for virtual interacting members.”
